Mental & Emotional Support Advocate

Our Mental and Emotional Support (MESA) is a Client Advocacy program that empowers those experiencing homelessness and assists them in navigating the often complex process of accessing services and resources.

The Issue

People experiencing homelessness usually find themselves struggling to navigate the complex process of accessing services and resources that could be of vital help to them. The process of securing essential services and permanent housing is oftentimes very lengthy, and requires extensive follow up. This is difficult to accomplish with limited access to a consistent source of basic needs such as food and shelter, not to mention transportation and access to a phone line or the internet.

The Solution

The MESA Program aims to address these issues  by matching unhoused clients to a MESA volunteer.  MESAs are volunteer client advocates who work on a one-on-one basis to provide a personalized service while establishing a supportive connection. The MESA program is a unique partnership between advocate and client that specifically caters to the needs of each person. MESA volunteers work with their matched clients for a minimum of 6 months to assist them in navigating the often complex process of accessing services and resources, as well as overcoming barriers on their path to stable housing. Having long-term support (6 months+) allows the client/volunteer team to develop a trusting relationship. Having long-term support will also help fill the gap in services after the client has been housed, and help lower the rates of recidivism. The MESA Advocate will work to facilitate access to support services with the ultimate aim of helping clients acquire permanent affordable housing and establish a sustainable lifestyle.

is a new model for service provision called Mental and Emotional Support Advocate (MESA). MESAs are volunteer client advocates who work on a one-on-one basis to provide their client with a personalized service while establishing a supportive connection.
